2016 Floods - Fort Bend County

In April and May of 2016, rainstorms caused catastrophic flooding in Fort Bend County. The Brazos River experienced severe flood levels and the rain caused stream, bayou, and street flash flooding throughout the county. The flooding events of 2016 caused hundreds of families and/or thousands of persons to be evacuated and unable to return to their damaged homes. Homes, businesses and public infrastructure flooding resulted in unprecedented damage throughout the county, leading to two Presidential disaster declarations. As part of these declarations, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) allocated funds to the state of Texas through the GLO for long-term recovery in the form of Community Development Block Grant disaster recovery (CDBG-DR) funds.

Fort Bend County Method of Distribution

As a HUD-designated “most impacted county,” Fort Bend County has been allocated $17,022,677 in CDBG-DR funds for long-term recovery. An additional allocation was awarded to Fort Bend County in the amount of $1,273,731. Per the submitted and GLO-approved MOD, the reallocation of CDBG-DR funds from de-obligated projects and/or cost savings from completed projects will be used to fund the county-wide housing program. Any increase in CDBG-DR program allocations will be applied to housing projects.
